In a resolute move aimed at safeguarding the food security of its populace, the Governor of Katsina State, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, issued the Food Security (Promotion) Order today. This order unequivocally prohibits the unlawful hoarding of food and essential commodities within the state, signaling the government's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its residents.

The order explicitly identifies food commodities, encompassing staple grains such as rice, millet, maize, sorghum, cowpeas, and groundnuts. Hoarding these essential items will now incur legal consequences.

Violation of this order will result in prosecution under Section 114 of the Penal Code Law of the State for the individual or corporate entity found in contravention. Additionally, the premises used for hoarding may be subject to a court-issued warrant, allowing authorities to break in and sell the commodities to the public at a controlled price.

The proceeds from such sales will be handled in accordance with prevailing laws on proceeds of crime. To ensure effective enforcement, a dedicated Task Force has been established. This diverse group is entrusted with:

1. Identifying food commodity hoarders within the State.
2. Engaging stakeholders on food prices in the state.
3. Collaborating with Security Agencies to apprehend and prosecute violators of the Order.
4. Regulating the buying and transportation of food commodities within and outside the state, including international borders.
5. Undertaking any other actions incidental or necessary for the enforcement of the provisions of this Order.

Governor Radda underscored the collaborative nature of this initiative, stating, “We call upon all citizens, traders, and stakeholders to join us in this fight against food insecurity. By working together, we can ensure that everyone in Katsina has access to the food they need.”
